The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on St. John has published a wonderfully detailed Smart Guide to Island Housekeeping. Check it out on their website: http://www.uufstjohn.org/smartguide-pg1.html If you would like a hard copy, they have recently printed about 2000. You can pick up a copy at the CBCC office and other places.

Larry and Marguerite Witanowski have reduced the use of energy for their Coral Bay vacation rental villa from an average of 205.7 kWh/day in 2008 to 99.7 kWh/day per vacation renter day in 2009, for a total yearly savings of $3,075. How did they do it? First they swapped out all their incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent and L.E.D energy saver lights. They put their hot water heater on a timer, providing hot water for a few hours in the morning and evening. They also used energy saver power strips to turn off vampire energy to audio/video equipment while not in use. They got rid of their digital cable box, which was consuming more energy than a 25 watt light bulb, even when off, and lowered the maximum temperature the spa could obtain. Discreet lettering was placed on air conditioners, laundry appliances and at the exit of the house to remind guests to turn everything off while away for the day. Then they put together a written guide to their guests to show how the guests could reduce their energy and water use. The results were excellent as you can see by the numbers. Electric use by renters was reduced by more than 1/2! Renters' comments have been positive. Go Green Villa Guide
